Keeping Your Water Well Clean
You might have a few projects lined up for spring. Don’t forget to include tasks related to your drinking water source. We have outlined a few essential tasks that you should add to the list of your spring projects.
1- Water testing- For getting your well water tested, spring is one of the ideal times. By scheduling the water testing simultaneously as the spring cleaning routine, there would be fewer chances of you forgetting to carry out annual water testing. Only consult a certified lab for testing the water. The results obtained from these tests can be compared with the standard EPA values given for drinking water in the public system. The same guidelines apply well to private systems as well.
2- Inspecting wellhead- Observe the well’s opening and look for any major changes. Besides these also ensure that the well cap is intact and there are no cracks, openings, or corrosion.
3- Cleanliness and accessibility of the well’s surroundings- Keep chemicals, waste, and contaminants, including paint and motor oils away from the well’s surrounding area. It’s a good idea also to clear up the plantation around the wellhead. It’s advised to plant only low maintenance grass near the wellhead. Though spring flowers look appealing, they can invite small insects and animals that may carry bacteria or contaminants. These can then contaminate the water in the well.
4- Restricting fertilizer and pesticide usage- In the surrounding area of the well you should not use any pesticides or fertilizers. The things sprayed or applied on the ground can seep into the groundwater. This groundwater is a source of your drinking water as well.
