Tips TO Ensure Safe Well Water
Whether the drinking water is safe or not can be a major concern for all of us. If a private well supplies water to your house, there are chances that the water might be unsafe. It can be because of wells getting polluted because of various contaminants or can be due to the dangerous chemicals that are getting into the septic system. We have some tips for you that you can implement to make sure your water supply is safe.
According to the guidelines of the local health district, get your septic system examined and pumped.
Refrain from flushing anything apart from human waste and toilet paper. It is possible that if you flush other things like petroleum, pesticides, or any other chemical, they can become a part of the septic system. They can then mix with drinking water.
Slope the area around the well’s opening in a way that surface runoff doesn’t enter the well. Also, make sure that there is a distance of at least 12 inches between ground level and your well’s opening.
There are chances that insects or small animals may enter well so to avoid that, place sanitary well cap.
From time to time, observe and examine the wellhead. Make sure the well cap is intact and secure and also check if there are any major changes. Besides that ensure there are no cracks or holes or signs of corrosion.
Maintain a log of any well maintenance processes like treatment or sediment removal which introduces chemicals in the well.
Whether you are building a new well, or closing, modifying, or abandoning an existing one, hire a professional and certified well driller for the job.
Abstain from using pesticides and fertilizers in the well’s surrounding area. If you apply anything in the ground, they can seep into the groundwater which is also the water source of your well.
Even in dry wells or abandoned wells don’t dump waste.
From time to time, do a thorough inspection of heating oil, diesel, or gasoline tanks located underground.
Stay updated about all activities on the property near the well and your property and make sure that they would not directly impact well’s water.
