Idyllwild sits at over 5,400 feet elevation in the San Jacinto Mountains, surrounded by national forest and wilderness. While the town has some municipal water, many properties — especially those in the surrounding areas like Pine Cove, Fern Valley, and Mountain Center — rely on private wells.
The bedrock is primarily Mesozoic granite and metamorphic rock — hard, fractured formations that require specialized drilling equipment. Wells here typically run 300-600 feet deep, with water found in fractured zones within the granite. Drilling in granite is challenging and expensive, but the reward is excellent water quality — cold, clean mountain water.
Most Idyllwild wells are 300-600 feet deep. The granite bedrock requires drilling into fractured zones where water accumulates. Shallow wells won't work here — you need to reach the fracture networks at depth. We use geological surveys and neighboring well data to estimate optimal depth.
Yes, but it's weather-dependent. Heavy snow makes access difficult, and we can't drill when ground is frozen. Best drilling season is late spring through fall. However, if you need emergency service, we'll make it work regardless of season.
Generally excellent! Mountain granite produces clean, cold water with low mineral content. Some wells have naturally occurring minerals, but serious contamination is rare. We recommend testing at drilling and periodically thereafter.
Mountain granite drilling is expensive — typically $30,000-$60,000+ depending on depth and access. Hard rock is slow to drill and wears out expensive bits. We provide honest estimates based on geological conditions.
Not if properly protected. Wellheads need insulation, and above-ground pipes must be heat-traced or buried below frost line. We design mountain wells for winter conditions and can retrofit freeze protection on existing wells.
We've drilled in the San Jacinto Mountains for 20+ years. We have the heavy-duty equipment needed for granite and the experience for mountain conditions.
We don't lowball mountain drilling costs. Hard granite is expensive, and we tell you the truth upfront.
