California Department of Water Resources places Temecula in the Temecula Valley Groundwater Basin, Bulletin 118 basin 9-05. The same basin underlies Murrieta, Pauba, Long, and Lancaster Valleys in southwestern Riverside County and a portion of northern San Diego County. DWR bounds it with crystalline rocks of the Peninsular Ranges and drains it by Wilson, Temecula, Murrieta, Warm Springs, and Pechanga Creeks to the Santa Margarita River. The basin description calls Quaternary alluvium the water-bearing material, estimated at more than 2,500 feet thick, with Holocene gravel, sand, silt, and clay generally about 100 to 125 feet thick and locally about 200 feet. It describes the Pleistocene Temecula Arkose as at least 1,400 feet thick, and says groundwater is also taken from residuum and fractured rock. Groundwater is generally unconfined, and confined in Pauba Valley and near some faults. Published yields in that description generally range to 300 gallons per minute in the northwestern part of the basin and reach 1,750 gallons per minute for wells in Pauba Valley. Those are basin figures cited by DWR from older reports. They are not a house-well promise for a De Luz hillside.
