A pitless adapter mounts inside your well casing, typically 4-6 feet below ground level (below the frost line). The adapter has two parts: a fixed portion welded or threaded to the casing, and a removable portion attached to your pump's drop pipe. When the pump is lowered into the well, these parts lock together, creating a watertight seal that directs water horizontally through the casing wall to your buried water line.

Signs Your Pitless Adapter Needs Replacement

Common warning signs include water bubbling up around your well head, unexplained pressure drops, or visible corrosion on the adapter during pump service. If your well was installed before 1970, it may have an older style pit instead of a pitless adapter—upgrading improves both safety and convenience.
