DWR Bulletin 118 basin 9-13, Poway Valley, is a small basin: 2,470 acres, about 3.8 square miles, under a portion of Poway Valley. It is not the whole city. DWR bounds it with impermeable rocks of the Peninsular Ranges and drains it by Poway and Los Penasquitos Creeks. Principal water-bearing units in that description are alluvium, residuum, and the Poway Group. Alluvium thickness ranges from 10 to 75 feet and averages about 40 feet. Residuum reaches about 70 feet. The Poway Group is the Stadium Conglomerate, the Mission Valley Formation, and the Pomerado Conglomerate. A ridge of Santiago Peak Volcanics along the western boundary inhibits groundwater flow to the west.
The U.S. Geological Survey report on the Poway basin (Evenson, 1989, WRI 88-4030) says wells in the Poway Group are about 100 to 200 feet deep and yield about 2 to 30 gallons per minute, from the coarser parts of the Stadium and Pomerado Conglomerates. Granitic rocks are exposed in or underlie the north and east parts of that basin. The report says wells in weathered tonalite can produce higher yields, and wells in the more resistant diorite and gabbro generally have low yields.

Poway has 206 domestic reports with a depth. Median depth is 500.5 feet, and the middle half fall between 300 and 687 feet. Median reported yield is 17 gallons per minute (185 reports with a yield). That median is far deeper than the 40-foot average alluvium in basin 9-13, which fits bedrock wells outside that small valley basin.
A published Poway production test on a 2 HP well recorded about 8 gallons per minute at the start, dropping as the well drew down (that job).
